Historic Cemetery Marker Restoration
In August 2023, the City will begin a new phase of headstone conservation at the historic Broad Street Cemetery. Ludlow Memorial Company will be onsite to address ongoing conservation work with a focus on leaning and broken stones during this phase.
Previous efforts in 2018 leveled, cleaned and repaired delicate marble and slate markers at Broad Street Cemetery, Greenlawn Cemetery and the Friends Burial Ground. In 2020, an early slate headstone was returned to Salem. The headstone, which was found in a garage in Scituate, MA, was originally located in Charter Street Cemetery where it marked the graves of unnamed infant children of Mary and William Bowditch, who lived in Salem in the late 1600s and early 1700s.
